Gwinnett County Police have a new tool to catch criminals.
Tuesday, the department showed off three new Automatic License Plate Readers (ALPR) and will begin using them this week.
The ALPR is a camera processing devise that is mounted on a patrol car and will allow officers to capture and read up 1,800 license plates per minute, day or night, in any weather. Each ALPR cost approximately $20,000. Gwinnett County used cash forfeitures from drug sales to purchase them.
The device records a time stamp and photo of the vehicle and compares it with millions of Hot List records to identify vehicles of interest.
