Atlanta Hawks 2009 Draft Preview
(Sports Network) - Atlanta has a solid, youthful core to build upon.Joe Johnson, Josh Smith, Al Horford and restricted free agent Marvin Williams are the talented building blocks for Mike Woodson but the team most acquire a more natural center and decide what they are going to do at the point. The team's only legitimate center, Zaza Pachulia, is an unrestricted free agent. Horford is the type of banger every team needs and does a yeoman job in the paint but limiting his minutes in the pivot should be a plus. Meanwhile, veteran point guard Mike Bibby is also free to go elsewhere. It's unlikely the Hawks re-sign both Pachulia and Bibby so their free agency plans will certainly affect draft day. Centers aren't exactly prevalent in this draft with Ohio State's B.J. Mullens as the only possible option when the Hawks pick. Point guard, on the other hand, is the draft's deepest position and North Carolina's Ty Lawson, Wake Forest's Jeff Teague or VCU's Eric Maynor might be on the board when Atlanta selects. Players under contract: G Speedy Claxton; C/F Al Horford; G Joe Johnson; G Acie Law; F Josh Smith; G Maurice Evans; C Randolph Morris Draft picks: 1st round (19th overall), 2nd round (49th overall)
