Georgia Tech Sends Clemson Packing In ACC Tourney

POSTED: 11:16 pm EDT March 12, 2009

(Sports Network) - Lewis Clinch scored a game-high 32 points and grabbed six rebounds as Georgia Tech upset 17th-ranked Clemson, 86-81, in the first round of the ACC Tournament at the Georgia Dome.

Gani Lawal chipped in with 20 points and 14 boards, while Alade Aminu had 12 points for Georgia Tech (12-18), which had dropped eight of nine coming into the contest. The Yellow Jackets will now play No. 4 seed Florida State in the quarterfinals on Friday.

"They have played like that the whole year," Georgia Tech head coach Paul Hewitt said of his team's performance. "They have played very hard. We have done some good things. The difference in the end - we made our free throws at the end of the game, 12-for-16 is a big difference for us to close the game out."

Iman Shumpert donated 11 points, five rebounds and five assists in the win.

Trevor Booker went for a team-high 17 points with nine boards for Clemson (23-8), which has lost four of its last five, but should still get an at-large berth in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.

K.C. Rivers, Terrence Oglesby, Demontez Stitt and Raymond Sykes each scored 11 points for Clemson.

With the score even at 39 at the end of one half, the upset-minded Yellow Jackets ran off eight in a row to start the second. Clinch accounted for five points during the spurt, including a trey nearly two minutes in.

Clemson narrowed its deficit to three after a pair at the stripe by Stitt near the midway point of the half, but the Yellow Jackets got their lead up to double-digits at 68-58 with 6 1/2 minutes to play.

The Tigers came to life in the closing minutes when Rivers and Oglesby each hit from beyond the arc to get Clemson within 79-75 with 1:09 left. However, pair of Shumpert free throws made it a six-point game with 12 seconds remaining.

After a three-ball by Andre Young got the Tigers to within three, 84-81, five seconds later, Clemson was forced to foul and Clinch calmly made both from the line to seal the win for the Yellow Jackets.

In a closely contested first half, Clemson built a 24-19 lead after Oglesby knocked down a three-pointer with 8:20 left in the stanza. However, Georgia Tech quickly tied it with a 5-0 run and the game was deadlocked heading into the break.

Game Notes

Young finished with six points...Georgia Tech shot 55.7 percent from the field, including 37.5 from three-point range...Clemson was 47 percent from the floor and 35.7 percent from beyond the arc.
