Johnson Gets New Contract At Georgia Tech

POSTED: 5:28 pm EST December 18, 2008

(Sports Network) - Georgia Tech head coach Paul Johnson agreed to an amended seven-year contract after guiding the Yellow Jackets to a 9-3 record, including a 5-3 conference mark, and a No. 14 BCS ranking.

The new contract will pay Johnson $17.17 million throughout the seven years, including $2.3 million in 2009.

"I am excited to be the head coach at Georgia Tech and to be a part of the great tradition here," Johnson said. "I look forward to continue being part of the Georgia Tech family for years to come."

Johnson won more games than any first-year Yellow Jackets head coach and was named the ACC Coach of the Year after coming over from Navy in the previous offseason. Georgia Tech snapped a seven-year losing streak to rival Georgia this season and earned a date with LSU in the Chick-fil-A Bowl.

"The future of Georgia Tech football has never been brighter," said athletic director Dan Radakovich. "We are thrilled that Paul Johnson will be leading our program for a long time."

With a win over the Tigers, Georgia Tech can secure its first 10-win season since 1998 in addition to an unblemished 3-0 record against the SEC.

Johnson previously served as Navy's head coach from 2002-2007, compiling a 45-29 record. His first head coaching job came with Georgia Southern from 1997-2001, where he posted a 62-10 record overall, including two FCS (formerly Division I-AA) championships in 1999 and 2000.
