Bob and Mike Bryan won a thrilling first-set tiebreaker and rolled from there to a straight-set victory over Jonas Bjorkman and Simon Aspelin to give the United States a 2-1 lead over Sweden in their Davis Cup semifinal tie.

The Bryans earned a 7-6 (13-11), 6-2, 6-3 victory on Saturday at the Scandinavium, leaving the Americans just one reverse singles victory away from a trip to the Davis Cup final.

Sweden now needs to win both reverse singles matches on Sunday to advance.

Andy Roddick will give the United States its first chance to clinch the tie on Sunday, as he is slated to face Thomas Johansson. Both were winners on Friday in the opening singles matches, but Roddick is 5-0 lifetime against Johansson, including a dominant 6-3, 6-2, 6-0 victory at the U.S. Open earlier this month.

Roddick gave the Americans a 1-0 lead with a straight-set win over Joachim Johansson, before Thomas Johansson squared it for the Swedes with a four-set triumph over James Blake.

If Thomas Johansson can beat Roddick on Sunday, the tie will come down to a winner-take-all match between Blake and Joachim Johansson.

Captains Patrick McEnroe of the U.S. and Mats Wilander of Sweden, however, can make changes to their starters on Sunday.

The Bryans improved to 12-1 in Davis Cup play. After a first set that took 59 minutes, the twins needed just another 68 minutes to polish off their Swedish opponents.

Neither side broke serve in the opening set, although the Bryans had five chances against the Swedes and didn't face a break point. The tiebreaker went back-and-forth with neither duo opening a lead of more than one point.

After the Swedes held serve for an 11-10 lead, the Bryans won the final three points to finally capture the set.

The momentum carried over for the Americans in the second set, as the Bryans finally gained a break of serve against Bjorkman for a 3-1 lead and added another break against Bjorkman to grab a two sets to none advantage.

Another break of Bjorkman for a 3-1 lead in the third was all the Bryans needed to finish off the match.

"Both me and Simon played good tennis today," said Bjorkman, "but the boys played too well, they didn't make any mistakes."

The Bryans were dominant during their service games, winning 62 of 70 points on their first serves and 12-of-21 on the second.

"I think that was our best Davis Cup match by far," said Mike Bryan. "We played two great sets so we're very happy."

In addition to helping their team, the Bryans also gained a small measure of revenge. They were the top seeds at the U.S. Open earlier this month and were upset in the quarterfinals by Aspelin and Austria's Julian Knowle, who went on to capture the doubles crown.

The winner of this best-of-five tie will face the Russia-Germany victor in the World Group final in late-November/early-December. Russia is the defending Davis Cup champ, but trails Germany 2-1.

The United States owns a record 31 Davis Cup titles, but is currently in its longest-ever championship drought, having not hoisted the chalice since 1995. The Swedes have won the title seven times, with their last one coming back in 1998.

The Americans are 8-3 all-time against Sweden, dating back to 1946, including a quarterfinal victory in Florida in 2004. The Swedes are 3-1 versus the U.S. in their ties on home turf, including a 5-0 victory in a final right here in Gothenburg 10 years ago. Sweden also topped the Americans in the final back in 1984.

The U.S. is 2-1 versus the Swedes in the Davis Cup semifinals, but 0-1 in ones played in Sweden.
