Soldier's Family Losing Home
Jamaal Addison Was Killed In Operation Iraqi Freedom
LITHONIA, Ga. -- Patricia Roberts stood in her family's condo surrounded by packing boxes and could could be described as a shrine to her late son.
Paintings, photos even flowers from the funeral are in the den. Seven years ago, Jamaal Addison was killed fighting in Iraq. He was the first Georgia soldier killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Now, his mother is fighting to keep the family in their home.
She lives with her mother, nephew and grandson, Jamaal Jr.
The bank foreclosed on their condo. On July 26, a judge ordered the family out by Aug. 2. Now, the family is getting help
A couple of local politicians are offering their support to help the family keep stay put.
Roberts said, "I have gotten phone calls from Fort McPherson and other people that they will do things that need to be done."
Roberts also met with an attorney from Legal Aid. Legal Aid says they are just beginning the process and it's too early to tell if the family will be able to stay in the home.
The condo was owned by Roberts' mother. Roberts said money has always been tight. In the fall, she says she had pay thousand of dollars to the homeowner's association in back fees. As a result, they fell behind on their $550/month mortgage. Then in the spring, Roberts said a health problem forced her to quit her job.
Roberts said she went to all the organizations she thought would help such as: the Fresh Start Program, the bank - Sun Trust bank, Outreach Ministries and United Way."
Each time she said she was told no one could help.
Roberts said, "I did everything I possibly could not to be here. I didn't know I'd be where I'd be where I am and I don't know where God is taking me."
She said she is hopefully someone can help her, but she is still packing. Roberts said it is ironic her moving day is Aug. 2, which is also Jamaal Addison day in DeKalb County.
