PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. -- Think you are exempt from driving on a golf cart and being able to text without getting a ticket? Think again.Peachtree City police are giving out citations the same as they would if you were driving a car. Each year, police said there are 60-70 accidents on the cart paths of Peachtree City.Police said about a third of the accidents had injuries, including a fatality several years ago.“We hope the new law will be a deterrent,” Capt. Rosanna Dove said.Dove thinks enforcement for them will be easier than in cars because golf carts are not enclosed.“So it is easier to see who is on the cell phone if they are speaking on it or if they are actually texting on it,” said Dove.CBS Atlanta News spoke to a number of people out jogging, walking their dogs, riding bikes and riding on golf carts. The overall consensus for everyone CBS Atlanta spoke to were in favor of the new law.“I see people who text going around these really sharp curves. There are all these trees, and the golf carts are really skinny, so you can’t fit well unless you maneuver right,” said resident Ashley Dahl.“I find it too dangerous too. I almost got hit by a kid that was and it is not something I want to risk,” Leah Benton said. “I was almost hit by a guy texting on a golf cart. He came around a sharp bend, and I was so scared because he was coming right at me. If I wasn’t paying attention, I would have gotten in an accident.”Police have six bike cops, two ATVs, and another motorized vehicle called a Rhino to patrol the paths. Some of the trails in Peachtree City are narrow, winding and bumpy. Police urge all residents to take a class about golf cart safety. For more information on the new law
