SNELLVILLE, Ga. -- The mother of one of five teenagers police arrested Tuesday and charged with gang activity at South Gwinnett High School said she spoke to her son about making good decisions the day before."I just told him, Monday, sometimes in life you might get only one mistake that you pay the rest of your life for. It was really just blown for me to have that news of my son being in a gang," said the shocked mother. She asked us not to reveal her identity because she has two younger children and she fears for her family's safety."I'm just working with it day by day, and pray about it, and just be there for them because I don't want them to see it's OK, because it's not OK," she said.Police said her son and his friends are members of a gang called the Gangster Disciples. The mother of one of the boys found a homemade video of several of the alleged gang members beating another teen in a school bathroom -- a way of initiating him into the gang."I always say don't get in a situation where I can't help you and that's what he has done now, because it's out of my hands and as much love as a mother have for their son, sometimes you have to cut ties," she said as tears fell down her cheeks. It's the kind of tough love she recommends all parents consider."Go through rooms, search, ask questions, those are the things you need to do as a parent. As a parent, I thought I was doing all that I can do and apparently, it seems like it wasn't," she said. This is the second gang initiation type beating at South Gwinnett High School this school year. The district said because of the incidents, the school has implemented extra security measures to ensure all students stay safe.
