AUSTELL, Ga. -- The Pierce family lost everything to the September floods, and nearly six months later the sight of their unfinished home is still devastating."My wife can't even look at it, it makes her cry," said Jack Pierce.Pierce said they almost lost their house in February. The family was behind on the mortgage and on the brink of foreclosure, but then North Georgia Disaster Committee agreed to help them rebuild. Disaster Committee chair Mike Yoder said their staff called the bank and got the Pierces an extension."Our people will call the bank, if we see it can be rebuilt in two or three months," said Pierce. "We give the bank a day that we will try to be out of the house, with it rebuilt."But shortly after the bank agreed to an extension, it became clear that even with the committee's help, the Pierces were too far behind."They won't do the work until we get some determination from the bank that we're going to be able to hold onto the house," said Pierce.Yoder said he understands the family's frustration, and they're not alone. The committee has identified more than 200 homes, just in Cobb County, that still need to be rebuilt. He said many of those families may have to make the difficult decision to walk away."We can't make that decision for them, we can only help," said Yoder. "And it's a bad situation, but it's brought on not only by the floods but the economic situation."
