Victim Identified As 18-Year-Old Rajaan Bennett

UPDATED: 4:48 pm EST February 18, 2010

Powder Springs police said two people are dead - one a Cobb high school football player - and another was wounded as a result of a murder/suicide on Woodcrest Drive.

Powder Springs officers and Cobb County Police SWAT entered the residence to find Rajaan Bennett, 18, of Powder Springs dead from at least one gunshot wound. The suspect, Clifton O’Neal Steger, 39, of Milledgeville, Georgia, was also found found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Police said they received a 911 call early Thursday from someone whispering for dispatchers to send help.

Once officers arrived, they knocked on the front door. At that time, officers heard four to five gunshots coming from inside the residence.

Narjaketha Bennett, 37, and her brother Taiwan Hunter, 32, both of Powder Springs exited the residence and were taken to safety.

Taiwan Hunter, 32, of Powder Springs, who was Rajaan's uncle, had been struck by at least one gunshot. He was taken to Atlanta Medical Center where he underwent surgery. He was in critical condition Thursday afternoon.

Two juvenile family members escaped the home unharmed.

Steger was identified as the ex-boyfriend of Narjaketha Bennett.

Bennett attended McEachern High School and played running back for the McEachern Indians. He had just received a football scholarship to Vanderbilt University.

On February 3, Bennett posted on his Facebook page, " I'm officially a commodore...GO VANDY!"

According to SportingNews.com, Bennett "committed to Vanderbilt, bypassing other schools such as Kentucky, Tennessee, Wisconsin and Louisville."

Rivals.com did an interview with Bennett in 2009. You can view that video here.

Friends have already started leaving messages on a Facebook page set up to remember him.

One friend wrote: "RIP RAJAAN! YOU WILL BE MISSED! I WILL NEVER 4GET DA DAYS WE USE TO CHILL AS YOUNG JITS IN MIDDLE SCHOOL! I SWEAR IT SEEMS JUST LIKE YESTERDAY WHEN WE WAS SITTING IN FRENCH, DRAWING & TALKIN JUNK TO EACH OTHER! EVEN THOUGH WE WASNT AS CLOSE WHEN WE GOT TO HIGH SCHOOL WE WERE ALWAYS COOL! LOVE YOU MY DUDE! YOU WILL NEVER BE 4 GOTTEN! GOD BLESS, YOUR BOY Ravae"

Another person wrote: "My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. I didn't know Rajaan, but I know what kind of kids Vanderbilt recruits, and I know that he was a special person, not only as a player, but as a friend, student, brother and son."

Neighbors were shocked to find out about the tragedy that surrounded them.

"I just heard the cops banging on the door and they said we had to leave because there was a situation," said neighbor Daniel Schatz. "I'm shocked to know that it's him."

Neighbor Rupert Suttles said Bennett was a nice guy and an amazing running back.

"I remember one game, he scored all the touchdowns,” said Suttles.

He wonders if Bennett died trying to protect his mother.

"I could see it in him, because when we was in school, and people used to disrespect the teachers, he used to step up like, 'This could be your mother. Don't disrespect them like that, you feel me?' And I could just see that in him, man."

Powder Springs Detectives are currently investigating the case.
