STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- A young mother and a DeKalb County police officer were shot at a home in Stone Mountain. The man accused of shooting them was killed, police told CBS Atlanta.The incident began at about 7:30 p.m. at an apartment complex just off North Hairston Road. Police said officers responded to a domestic violence call at one of the units.Police said Horace Mitchell opened fire on the mother of his son at his home. When police arrived, police said, Mitchell went outside and began shooting at them.The bullets hit the woman and Sergeant Charles Broome, a 15-year veteran. Police fired back, killing Mitchell."They just sounded like rapid fire bursts. Then you heard all the officers fire back,” said Lamont Hunte, who lives across the walkway from Mitchell’s apartment.Hunte had just come back from the store as bullets flew. His family was pinned inside their home in terror."That was nerve wracking. My wife and daughter were home by themselves,” Hunte said. They ran into the bathroom. The whole time Hunte kept thinking, “God please keep my family safe.”The woman was in stable condition at Grady Memorial Hospital. The officer was shot in the leg. His injuries were not life threatening, police said.Officers carried out the victim's frightened son. Police told CBS Atlanta he may have seen his own mother get shot. The boy was not injured. He was staying with family members, police said. Police are not releasing the name of the victim or her son.Neighbors said Mitchell never showed any sign of trouble at home.“He was an even keeled guy. He wanted to take care of his son. He was trying to get everything back on track," Hunte said."He was a nice guy. He was friendly to everybody," said Amanda Sanders.Mighty Olulu was working on his computer during the shootout. He was not surprised and has fallen numb to the violence."I expect this to happen living around here,” Olulu said. "I've seen a lot of guns and shooting. This happens a lot."
