Crime Has Crippled A South Fulton County Community

Neighbors Concerned About Crime Believe Their Community Is Under Siege

A victim, whose home was broken into four times, wants to know what police are doing to keep her safe.

Lula Gilliam showed CBS Atlanta the broken window thieves smashed out to get inside her home.

They ransacked it and stole small items because she doesn't have flat-screen TVs.

Gilliam said this is not her first break-in.

"The last time, they came through my patio door and kicked it open," said Gilliam.

Gilliam had burglar bars installed on her doors after that break-in, that was after the second and third time.

"This is the fourth time I've been broken into -- we're under siege over here," Gilliam said.

Gilliam lives in Fairburn in South Fulton County. She's frustrated and feels the police are not doing enough to keep her neighborhood safe.

"I'm just really not satisfied with the police protection and I know that they are understaffed. What am I suppose to do about that? I just wrote a check for my property taxes," Gilliam said.

Charles Chenault is pastor of the Christians Living For Christ Church in Gilliam's neighborhood.

He said thieves stole an $8,000 lawnmower that belonged to the church.

"There is no facility that gives these individuals something to do outside walk the streets," said Chenault.

Both Chenault and Gilliam believe teenagers committed all these crimes. Gilliam said that's troubling because she helps teens get their General Educational Developments (GEDs).

"I've dedicated my entire life to trying to save our youth, I think that's probably the most hurtful," said Gilliam.
