Officials To Look Into Vacant Norcross Apts.
Burned Out Apartment Buildings Have Residents Worried About Safety
CBS Atlanta gets action, after asking Gwinnett County officials Tough Questions about some burned out apartment buildings.Gwinnett officials said Monday that the fire marshal and workers with the Department of Building and Planning made a special trip to the Sinclair Apartment complex in the 6100 block of Norcross-Tucker Road in Norcross. They were there to inspect two burned out buildings that some residents say are a hazard. One building burned over the weekend, while the other burned several years ago and has been vacant ever since.Residents like Joe Newton say just boarding up the buildings isn't enough."There is always the possibility that a child can get in there and the ceiling can fall. They'll nail up these plywood sidings and they'll start peeling off, the children will get in there, and then you've got a public problem," Newton said. After examining both buildings, Gwinnett officials said code enforcement will open a file on one of the buildings because it has been sitting vacant too long. However, the Gwinnett County Fire Department said ultimately, it is up to the apartment complex and its insurance company to decide if the buildings are torn down.
