ATLANTA -- CBS Atlanta got action Tuesday afternoon for southwest Atlanta residents who complained about an illegal dump.Residents living on Drummond Street in Southwest Atlanta said they were fed up with the trash that piled up in their neighborhood.CBS Atlanta called the public works department, and workers cleaned up the mess Tuesday afternoon.Residents said that for about two months, someone had been dumping old furniture and other trash in a vacant lot."Through the night, different periods of time, people come through and they are just dumping trash," said resident Albert Geter.Geter said it's a reoccurring problem. He said in October, city workers cleaned everything up but people still dumped trash there. Most of the homes on Drummond Street are boarded up or for sale. Residents believe dumpers see the abandoned homes and think it's an invitation to unload because they wont get caught. "But that looks much better down there now,” said nearby resident Lisa Arnold.“I really appreciate it, but I’m not sure it’ll stay like that,” said Leon Sims, who lives directly across the street from the site.CBS Atlanta News has learned the landowner got lucky in this case. Public Works crews are only responsible for cleaning up the public rights of way. Instead, they cleaned up the entire lot.Mike Renshaw, director of Atlanta's Bureau of Code Compliance, told CBS Atlanta News that his office will continue to put legal pressure on the landowner to keep his lot clean.
