Man Runs From MARTA Police
Mayor Elect Kasim Reed said he will crack down on panhandlers begging for money in Atlanta. So, CBS Atlanta News went to Sunday's Falcons game to see if panhandlers were a problem. While working on our story a panhandler approached CBS Atlanta News reporter Mike Paluska asking for money. Twice, in fifteen minutes, the panhandler asked for $2 to ride MARTA. When the reporter asked the panhandler what he was going to use the money for he slapped the camera, twice and then ran from police. An officer told CBS Atlanta News that type of behavior is something they see on a daily basis. In December, the mayor-elect told members of the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau that enforcing city ordinances concerning panhandling would be a priority of his administration. Fans going to the Georgia Dome on Sunday had mixed feelings on panhandlers.“I think there should be more done by the city to clean them up and get them removed . They are a nuisance to society and people’s safety,” Nathan Coker said.“For whatever reason, they have fallen on hard times or they have a mental illness. When they ask me for money, it doesn’t bother me. If I have some spare change I will give it to them,” Chris Wilson said.During the incident where the panhandler slapped the camera. CBS Atlanta News reported the incident to a local police officer with MARTA. The panhandler ran across the street across Northside Drive in front of the Georgia Dome away from police. Moments later, officers caught up with him across the street. MARTA Police asked CBS Atlanta if they wanted to press charges on the panhandler for slapping the camera. But since the panhandler did no damage or physical harm no charges were filed.Fans at the game said they hoped Reed will make good on his promise to crack down on panhandlers in the city of Atlanta.Visitors to the city for conventions have often listed panhandlers asking for money as one of the city's major drawbacks.
