JONESBORO, Ga. -- The top cop in Clayton County may soon be on the way out after allegations of corruption and mismanagement in the department. Clayton County Commissioners voted Tuesday night to start the process of removing Police Chief Jeff Turner.Chief Turner has led the department for three years. His boss, the chief of staff of the county, now questions decisions made during his entire term.Alex Cohilas laid out 12 concerns about how situations were handled, from officers who were arrested to sexual harassment claims, to questioning a police chase which resulted in the deaths of two innocent women. Serious concerns were also raised in an audit of the department regarding the storage, handling and disposal of seized drugs. The same audit revealed more than 100 missing weapons. After hearing the allegations, the board of commissioners voted to start the process of removing Chief Turner.“I am upset, and I'm confused about everything that was said,” said Turner.Reporter Jennifer Mayerle said, “They painted a picture of corruption and disarray in the police department. Is the police department corrupt and in disarray?”Turner answered, “No. Have we had bad officers in the past? Yes. Those officers were dealt with.”Chairman Eldrin Bell said the vote had everything to do with eliminating risks to Clayton County.“This is about administering the police department in a manner in which it protects the department from unnecessary lawsuits,” said Bell.Mayerle asked if he was satisfied with the job Chief Turner is doing.Bell said, “That’s a good question which I won't answer.”Chief Turner has until Monday, Dec. 28, to respond to the allegations. Turner told CBS Atlanta News he doesn’t know if he will respond to the allegations, and will pray before making a decision.Commissioners indicated Tuesday if Turner is removed, they will offer him a new post as head of the county’s police academy.Commissioners also rescinded their vote from last week that took away the police chief’s control of the Police Department and gave it to Bell. Bell later issued a statement indicating he opposed the move to take away the police chief’s control of the Police Department.
