Fired Fulton County Top Jailer Speaks Out

Major Felicia Jackson Says She Didn't See Shake-Up Coming

A woman who was a top jailer at the Fulton County Jail spoke with CBS Atlanta News about Monday’s shake-up there.

Felicia Jackson worked at the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office for 21 years, working her way up to major, the third highest ranking position at the jail. Jackson was the overnight jail commander.

Monday, a fellow deputy showed up at her East Point home with a letter.

“I received a notice from the Fulton County sheriff, Theodore Jackson, that I would be terminated,” she said.

The official reason for the firing was that she missed a mandatory 4 p.m. meeting Monday. Jackson said that because she works nights, she sleeps during the day. So she missed the 10 a.m. e-mail notifying her of the meeting, she said.

Two other top brass at the jail were also relieved of their duties; Chief jailer Charles Felton and assistant chief jailer Willie Hood. Both men had retired from other departments before coming to the Fulton County jail a year or so ago.

The Fulton County Jail has been under a federal judge’s order for several years to clean up the way the jail is run. In a statement, a jail spokeswoman said the change was necessary and will be a positive move in the right direction.

Jackson said there’s nothing in her record that might have caused her to lose her job, except perhaps one thing. She filed a grievance a few months ago concerning her pay.

“Other majors are receiving $90,000 in salary, and I’m receiving $71,000 in salary. And I’m not sure if that had anything to do with it,” Jackson said.

Jackson said she will not try to get her job back. She’s planning to sign her retirement papers this afternoon.

“I’m very frustrated. I put my heart, sweat, blood, tears, knowledge and everything into that job. And I’m very disappointed,” she said.
