A metro Atlanta man is in jail charged with raping a girl he was in the process of adopting.

Raymond Chapman was working at the Georgia Baptist Children's Home in Palmetto when the rape accusations surfaced. The home caters to children in need of loving homes.

The charges come after a homeowner on an undeveloped street called police about a suspicious white SUV. The homeowner had seen the SUV pull down the desolate street several times before. When police checked out the SUV parked in the cul-de-sac, reports show they found Chapman with the teenage girl he was in the process of adopting.

Police investigated and charged Chapman with two counts of rape. Chapman’s family didn’t want to talk about the charges, but a neighbor did.

“Wow, that's horrible,” said Lesa McLeod.

McLeod is concerned about her 10-year-old daughter, and said there are roughly a dozen young girls living on the same street.

“I’m just terrified that it could have been one of our children,” said McLeod.

She never thought she had to worry about the kids playing outside.

“That’s scary, because I did my research checking for the pedophiles before I ever moved in,” said McLeod.

Chapman was fired his job. The president and CEO of Georgia Baptist Children's Home and Family Ministries released this statement, "Our children's home family is deeply shocked and saddened by this situation. Naturally, we will be cooperating with state and local authorities as they continue with their investigation."

Chapman is being held in the Coweta County jail without bond. His next court appearance is in March.
