ATLANTA -- There was a little something different at this year's Thanksgiving festsival at Turner Field. The grassroots group Hosea Feed the Hungry and the Homeless serve tens of thousands of hot holiday meals. But they also gave out free H1N1 vaccinations to people in need and the homeless. The vaccine is in high demand yet short in supply for the general population. CBS Atlanta asked is it appropriate to distribute the shots at this event when so many people need them?Dr. Patrice Harris, District Director of the Fulton County Department of Health said, “every place is the right place to administer the vaccination.”Fulton and Dekalb counties had 400 doses of the vaccine to administer. They gave priority to people the Centers for Disease Control have identified as at the greatest risk for contracting h1n1: young children, pregnant women and people with chronic illnesses. “We have so many high risk groups here. This the best place for them to get their shots,” said Dr. Elizabeth Ford, District Health Director for the Dekalb County Health Department.CBS Atlanta also asked health officials, will they turn down anyone who is not part of a high risk group?“We are not going to turn away,” Dr. Ford said. “We’ll give out the vaccine until it’s gone.”
