ATLANTA -- The People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals wants Georgia mascot UGA VII replaced -- with a robot.UGA VII, the latest in the line of English bulldogs that serve as the Georgia Bulldogs' mascot, died last week due to heart-related causes. The dog was buried Saturday at Sanford Stadium, just hours before the Georgia-Kentucky game.In a statement on its Web site, the animal rights' group blamed the dog's death on inbreeding. The group also said a fitting tribute to UGA VII would be to stop the inbreeding of bulldogs, which the group said also causes overpopulation in shelters."To help end the crisis, and UGA's string of preventable mascot deaths, we're asking the University to honor UGA VII by replacing him with an animatronic (robot) or solely using their costumed mascot, Hairy Dawg," the group said on its Web site. There was no immediate reaction from the university. The Seiler family of Savannah has been providing bulldogs to the university since 1956.POLL: What Do You Think?
