ATLANTA -- There is good reason to be concerned about the safety of some metro Atlanta nail salons. CBS Atlanta News has learned there are only nine state inspectors monitoring more than 700 licensed nail salons in Georgia. Not to mention, those nine inspectors are responsible for monitoring thousands of hair salons as well.It may explain why a CBS Atlanta undercover camera investigation uncovered violations at several nail salons like City Nails and Spa in Snellville. The state fined the Gwinnett County salon $500 on their last inspection for not properly cleaning their instruments. Plus, CBS Atlanta's undercover producer did not see salon workers sanitize any equipment prior to giving her a pedicure."Do you understand why your instruments have to be cleaned properly?" asked CBS Atlanta's Adam Murphy. "Yes, I do. We have to have new equipment after each customer so no one gets an infection," said City Nails and Spa Owner Tony Pham.City Nails and Spa showed CBS Atlanta the steps they take to keep their salon clean. They said that every nail tech has two sets of instruments which they rotate between customers. They also said they sterilize their dirty instruments in an autoclave.CBS Atlanta's investigation also uncovered health violations at Nail Talk and Tan on Piedmont Road in Atlanta. State inspectors fined the salon $1,000 for reusing dirty instruments on customers.State inspectors also issued a $1,000 fine to Angel Salon on Panola Road in Lithonia. Inspectors found dirty instruments in the salon that even appeared to be rusty. Plus, the salon was cited for reusing unsanitized razors and blades on customers.CBS Atlanta also uncovered violations at Nifty Nails on Cumming Highway in Buford. The salon failed to post their last inspection in an open area of the business for the public to see."So you have the inspection in a drawer," asked Murphy. "How is the public able to see this when you have it in a drawer?"The state even issued cease and desist orders for three nail techs that were working at Nifty Nails with out a license."Why were you guys hiring people that didn't have a proper license?" asked Murphy. "I'm not the manager," said a Nifty Nails employee.Salon employees immediately posted their inspection for the public to see after CBS Atlanta News started asking them the tough questions. A Nifty Nails employee also said that the three unlicensed techs no longer work at the salon.CBS Atlanta News spoke with a member of the Georgia Board of Cosmetology regarding our investigation and they said budget cuts are to blame for the health risk you face at nail salons.
