Home Security: There's An App For That

Homeowners Can Control Alarm System From iPhone

When Karen Ubell comes home, the busy lawyer and professor has a lot to do. But worrying that she and her home are safe and secure is not on that list.

"I feel pretty secure," Ubell said.

That's because, as Ubell said, "Security: There's an app for that."

"From the iPhone, I can actually arm and disarm my security system," Ubell said.

Using an iPhone or a Blackberry, the Alarm.com system allows you to monitor every part of your home. It will even notify you if glass breaks or a door opens.

"I could be at the airport and look at my iPhone and do what I need to do with my security system," said Ubell.

There is also real-time video showing Ubell what is happening inside the house every hour of the day -- streamed live from tiny cameras.

"The one in the living room kind of pans around and you can actually point it in one corner from your iPhone," Ubell said.

It's a high-tech security system, but it was no problem outfitting Ubell's 1920s home, because everything -- from the cameras to the glass break sensors -- is wireless.

"The only thing you need is high-speed internet and power," said Michael Morton with EMC Security.

Although Ubell's main concern is the crime in Atlanta, a few months ago, she had her house on the market and was able to monitor how often the real estate agent showed the home to prospective buyers. And, the system has a few other uses:

"I was able to use it to let services folks in, let the maid in," Ubell said. "I don't want to sound totally lame, but sometimes I can see what my dog is doing."

Some people are even using the system for the elderly.

"Customers want to know if their aging parents are doing OK," Morton said.

Across town in Grant Park, a couple twice used their own video system to catch thieves inside their home. The videos became viral on YouTube and helped police make an arrest.

Alarm.com could help people do the same.

"I tend to think that most burglars are trying to come to your house when you're not there," Ubell said.

The systems are available through certified dealers, like EMC Security in Suwannee. Basic installation costs around $300. Users then pay between $18 and $30 a month, which includes the cost of video storage. CBS Atlanta found that the costs are similar to other home security systems.
