LILBURN, Ga. -- The quiet city of Lilburn has a lot of people talking. A proposed mosque has emotions running high on both sides. The first re-zoning meeting on the issue was canceled and that created an uproar.Since then, “Save Lilburn” signs have popped up all over town. Angel Alonso, who is at the forefront of the effort against the mosque, says he has collected more than 1,500 signatures against the proposal.“We don't see they're bringing any good by putting it in a residential area,” said Alonso.Dar-E-Abbas already worships in a house along busy Highway 29. Their proposed building would be two stories with a cemetery. The complex would also go back into the neighborhood. For it to be a reality, several properties need to be rezone commercial.Nancy Kinkade said it’s about location."There's so many of us that have been trying for so many years to grow Lilburn well. Don't grow it scattered," said Kinkade.Kyle Wright said if the proposal was a Baptist church she probably would not feel the same."We want to keep our town small, quaint and charming," said Wright.Members of the Muslim community said the reasons given against the mosque are the usual ones like too much traffic. They said they are part of the neighborhood too. Both sides have attorneys.
