Guard Dog Offers New Sense Of Security

Trainers Say Sales Are Soaring

An adult guard dog can cost more than $3,000, but one owner said the price is worth it. James Dudley had his rottweiler for more than a year before he decided to have him trained.

"I'm thankful all the time to have the dog," said Dudley. "Whether I take him out with me, or I'm home, it's the peace of mind."

Frank Silva, co-owner of US K-9 Command Dogs, said Dudley's attitude has spread throughout Atlanta.

"A couple houses get broken in to, and the one thing [families] are looking to do is arm themselves," said Silva.

"If you fire a gun and kill somebody you can't take the bullet back," said Dudley.

K-9 Command sells and trains puppies and adult dogs. They mostly work with German shepherds and Dobermans, but Silva said nearly every size or breed can be taught to attack.

"You're not going to take a weak dog and make him tough," said Silva. "You use what Mother Nature put into the animal."

Dudley said no matter what breed you choose, you have to be willing to spend the time.

"The more time I give him, the better the training will be," said Dudley.
