COBB COUNTY, Ga. -- People who live along the Chattahoochee River in Vinings had quite a scare Wednesday morning. Heavy rains caused the river to overflow its banks by more than five feet, causing a bit of panic in neighborhoods already water-weary after North Georgia’s historic flood two months ago.Taylor Smith, whose family once owned the Atlanta Falcons, and his wife Deidra watched the water surround their home along Paces Ferry Drive. Since the road was underwater, they left on a canoe with their dog Dooley. The Smiths say this flooding is nothing like the September flooding. Back then, flood waters rose almost into the first floor of their home, despite the fact that it was built 11 feet above ground. “It’s not as bad as it was before, but it’s kind of disappointing. It got a little bit in our hallway. The yard’s kind of all under water,” said Smith. “And we had just gotten finished cleaning it up from last time,” added his wife.At the nearby Canoe restaurant, employees watched the Chattahoochee closely. Usually there’s a nice view of the river in the distance. Wednesday morning, the river had risen almost onto the back patio. Back in September, the inside of the restaurant was flooded worse than ever before. “We had five feet in the building, so it would’ve been up to our necks right now where we are,” said Vincent Palermo, one of the restaurant’s owners.Palermo said this moderate flooding won’t stop him from getting the place ready for Canoe’s grand re-opening in two weeks. “After September, nothing really worries us. We’ve really been through so much that this is again just a very minor setback compared to what happened two months ago,” he said.
