Gwinnett County police arrested the parents of three boys after they discovered the filthy conditions of the home. Investigators say the home is infested with fleas, roaches and rat droppings.

Ronnie and April Keais were arrested late Monday night, charged with three counts of child cruelty and one count of animal neglect. Police were called to the home on Pinella Drive in Grayson because one of their sons was missing. When police saw the awful conditions the boys, ages 6, 11 and 14, were living in, they charged the Keaises.

“This is really hard for my family right now,” said April’s sister.

Reporter Jennifer Mayerle asked her if she minded talking about what type of mother April is.

“She loves her boys, she loves her boys very much,” said the sister.

When Mayerle asked how she thought this happened, the sister answered, “That's all I can say, I don't know.”

Neighbors say the signs were there.

“The little boy just ran all over the place, he never wore shoes, he wore the same pants for weeks and weeks on end,” said Amanda Ireland.

As a result of the charges, April was fired Wednesday from her job as a bus driver for Gwinnett County Public Schools. Fellow bus driver Jerry Howard lives in the neighborhood and agrees with the decision.

“If she's dealing with children and her own children are having to deal with that, I don't have a problem with it,” said Howard.

Bond has been set for the Keaises. As a condition of bond, they had to give up their 10-year-old Chihuahua, Jersey. He's now up for adoption at Gwinnett County Animal Control. The couple is also ordered to stay away from their children.

“I just hope someone can take care of them and make their lives better,” said Ireland.

The Keaises will appear in court on Nov. 5. Their sons are with family.
