Parents Plead With School Board Over Cell Phone Tower

Cobb County School Board Votes To Put Cell Tower On Elementary School Property

The Cobb County School Board votes to put a cell tower on an elementary school property, but not before parents plead with them to vote their way.

Allowing the tower to be built would bring in money for East Valley Elementary, but some parents said it will be harmful to the students.

“This community is bleeding because of this re-vote. You have parent against parent, you have Cub Scout against Cub Scout,” said one parent.

The divide is over whether a T-Mobile cell tower should be built on East Valley Elementary School property. The board already voted yes, but a parent sued the school district, and last month a judge ordered the board to hear from the community again.

“This is the community, this is who has the most to lose,” said a mother.

The opposition fears the tower will be harmful to their kids.

“If I stand on my property I look at that cell tower, but the first priority is health concern,” said a man who lives near the school.

“The community does not all say no. There are plenty of us that say yes,” said another parent.

The lease of the land would bring in $450,000 to the school over 15 years.

“These cell towers are safe, East Valley could desperately use the funding to become a more competitive school,” said another parent.

Currently, there are 19 cell towers on Cobb County school campuses. Thursday night the board voted again to put a tower at East Valley Elementary School.

“At the end of the day, we were robbed,” said a parent.
