ATLANTA -- Seconds after the final play of the Georgia Tech vs. Virginia Tech football game at Bobby Dodd Stadium, the field was taken over by Yellow Jacket fans."By the time you got into the middle of the field it was so condensed you couldn't see any green space anywhere," said Trey Zepernick, a Georgia Tech student. It didn't take long for students to take over the goal post too. They pulled and shook the structure until it finally fell to the ground."I've always heard that was a tradition in college football, trying to tear down the goal posts, but I didn't know how it would happen," said Sean Faltermeier, a sophomore. "We just saw people jumping up and down on it then falling down."The goal post's snap didn't end the celebration. Students carried the post onto 10th Street where they ran into Georgia Tech President Bud Peterson. The post was carried to the president's front lawn and cut into pieces. Trey Zepernick and his fraternity brothers were able to recover a coveted piece. Zepernick said there was a point where he worried about his own safety, before the adrenaline of the win took over."As soon as they started pulling down the goal post of course everyone started getting nervous, but it's the mob mentally," said Zepernick. "You had to pull down the goal post, you had to."A few people were injured jumping over the stadium wall, but the university released a statement that said fan safety is their foremost concern. A university spokesperson said they do not condone or support the tradition of tearing down the goal posts. The president has asked for a review of safety procedures to ensure that, in the future, precautions are in place. There is no word on how much replacing the goal post will cost.
