The Atlanta Humane Society rescued more than 20 Pit Bulls from a southeast Georgia breeder charged with raising dogs for the purpose dogfighting.

The raid happened Tuesday morning at a home on Old Dairy Road near the intersection of state highway 29 South in Higgston, just west of Vidalia in Montgomery County.

Sheriff's deputies said they'd gotten a tip that the dogs had been subjected to dogfighting. When deputies served a warrant, along with private investigators from a firm in Atlanta, they found more than 20 dogs on the property ranging from adults to puppies.

Investigators said they noticed that many of the adult pit bulls were bloody and had fresh wounds that would normally be associated with dogfighting. One puppy was described as being near death from severe dehydration and an adult dog had critical injuries on its mouth.

The Atlanta Humane Society and the Georgia SPCA will provide immediate medical attention and transportation to housing and further medical care. One person was arrested and faces charges of dogfighting and felony cruelty to animals.

More arrests are expected in the case, investigators said.
