COVINGTON, Ga. -- Two Newton County deputies who were shot by a Covington man were recovering Tuesday in an Atlanta hospital.The deputies answered a 911 call Monday from Thomas Powell, 20, who threatening suicide at a home on Parker Road.As deputies approached the house, according to investigators, Powell began firing a gun at them from inside.James Trent, 50, was shot in the jaw. Wesly Atha, 25, was shot in the forearm and back.Both were taken to Atlanta Medical Center and underwent surgery.Both deputies’ have been upgraded to good condition."I spoke to Deputy Trent and he actually said to me, 'Jesus protected us all,'" said Kendra Gerlach with Atlanta Medical Center. "I spoke to him [Deputy Atha] also and he was able to tell me that his vest saved him."The shootings spurred a five hour SWAT stand-off with the man police say pulled the trigger.Powell’s mother showed up soon after.Deputies later found Powell dead inside the home. They said it appears he committed suicide.His friends and family members were weeping when they heard the news."She's really upset about it, too, so I can imagine,” said neighbor Denise Lynch.
