An Alabama woman has been charged with helping four inmates escape from the St. Tammany Parish jail by sneaking them hacksaw blades inside a Bible, the sheriff said Tuesday.

Claudia Buras, 24, surrendered to St. Tammany deputies Monday night in Covington. She's charged with one count of introducing contraband into a penal institution and one count of assisting escape. Both are felonies.

Buras is accused of conspiring with her ex-husband to help him and the other three prisoners escape on June 18. Eric Buras, Gary Slaydon and Jason Gainey were recaptured a few hours later, and Timothy Murray was recaptured June 21, New Orleans television station WDSU reported.

According to Claudia Buras and sheriff's office records, Buras traveled to the jail on June 7 to visit her ex-husband. During that visit, two or three hacksaw blades were exchanged by concealing them in the spine of a Bible, deputies said.

Investigators recovered three blades after the June 18 escape.

Buras told investigators she made an earlier attempt to bring the blades to her ex-husband. That attempt, in March of this year, was scuttled for unknown reasons, deputies said.

Claudia Buras was released Monday night on $100,000 bond.
