ATLANTA -- A man accused of being involved in a shootout with Clark Atlanta officers has been found after he escaped from the new high security police headquarters.Atlanta police investigators are in the process of confirming his true identity. The man told CBS Atlanta his name was Matthew Wells.Wells will be charged with escape by the Atlanta Police Department and will have other charges pending through Clark Atlanta University Police. The subject was taken into custody without incident.Wells told CBS Atlanta he picked the lock on his leg shackles and walked out of a deadlocked interrogation room.In surveillance video you can see him waiting at the elevator. Then he walked out the back door and jumped over a fence to freedom.“I'm sorry. If I had another chance I would never do it again and I will hope God be with me,” said Wells.Wells was involved in a shooting near Clark Atlanta University Wednesday. The shooting happened at Elm Street and Fair Street about four blocks from the campus.Campus police responded to a call where they found two men with guns.Officers said they told the men to drop their weapons and when they didn’t, the officers and the suspects exchanged fire. The officers were not injured. One of the suspects was taken to a hospital and Wells was taken to jail where he was questioned by police.Wells then escaped from a police interview room. But police didn't tell the public the suspect had escaped for more than 15 hours.“I don't believe anybody was keeping anybody from knowing,” said Atlanta Police Deputy Chief Carlos Banda.Atlanta city councilperson and public safety chair Cleta Winslow said not letting the council and the public know sooner put people at risk. She plans to demand answers.“I'm sure it's somewhat embarrassing for police,” said Winslow. “I am concerned. I do want to say that, and I do want to, I will be getting in touch with [Atlanta Police] Chief [Richard] Pennington right away.”CBS Atlanta also wanted to talk with Chief Pennington but our calls were not returned.Police are investigating what happened and said there are "certain glitches" at the new headquarters that need to be worked out.
