Victim Identified As Jaquane Butler

The 12-year-old boy who police said was shot and killed at an East Point apartment complex Wednesday night was identified as Jaquane Butler.

The shooting happened late Wednesday night at the Eagle’s Crest apartment complex on Spanish Trail. Investigators said Butler's 14-year-old neighbor and playmate had a gun and pulled the trigger, shooting Butler in the chest.

"I want to wake up and say thank God that was a dream, but I can't," said Jeanette Butler, the victim's grandmother.

Jaquane Butler was a rising 7th grader at Woodland Middle School. His grandmother said he loved to draw, he loved to read and he dreamed of being an NBA basketball player one day.

His grandmother said Jaquane had just finished eating dinner when he asked to go outside and play. Some 20 minutes later, Jaquane was dead outside his friend's apartment.

"I was supposed to be their safe haven. It's senseless, it's senseless," Jeanette Butler said.

She said she has questions about how her grandson's friend got his hands on a gun.

"You don't leave kids in a house with a gun where there's no adult," she said.

The name of the shooter has not been released.
