Gwinnett To Refurbish Old School Buses

Move Would Save $24 Million, School Officials Say

Gwinnett County schools officials are fixing up old buses instead of buying new ones to help save money as state funding becomes scarce.

By 2010, the state's largest school district plans to have refurbished nearly 400 buses that are at least 15 years old. Chief Operating Officer Jim Steele said the move would save about $24 million.

Steele said the old buses get new engines, upgraded safety features and new lights, which costs about $13,000, compared to the $80,000 it would cost to buy a new bus.
