2nd Graders Form Business, Make Profit

A group of second graders in College Park has taken school work to a whole new level.

They've created their own company at school that has not only made money, but has helped others in need.

The students at the Woodward Academy in College Park opened a business to make a difference for others.

The idea came while they were studying economics.

"The kids started learning about making a business and since it is the holiday season they wanted to give back to the community," said Chris Andres.

So they started making greeting cards and the money started rolling in.

"They have nothing inside so you can write them," said Seeta Patel.

Each executive is responsible for making sure this company runs smoothly and so far they have made a profit of over $3,000.

The proceeds will go to two needy College Park families and an unusual purchase for a family overseas.

"We're going to buy a water buffalo for $2,500 for a family in India and send it to them," said one student.

But whether its buffalos or blankets, these young CEO's are making bucks and bucking the notion that big business is strictly for the grownups.

They have sold their cards at craft fairs and to friends and neighbors in the in their neighborhood.

They made a commercial with a jingle and created all their company forms on Excel and Word, something many grownups are still trying to master.
