ATLANTA -- Short on cash? You could have thousands of dollars waiting for you at the Georgia Department of Revenue and not even know.Sheila Sellers teaches first grade reading and math, but when she got a letter from the Georgia Department of Revenue, not even the math teacher thought it added up.“I opened it and looked and I’m like OK, this is a scam,” said Sellers. The letter informed Sellers that she had nearly $2,000 waiting for her to claim.“I decided to call the police,” said Sellers. “The officer got there and was like, well, it looks real.”And it was. It’s all part of the $900 million in unclaimed property sitting in the Georgia Department of Revenue’s vault, and the number is growing. If you haven’t claimed something from a bank or maybe a business for 5 years, by law it comes here.“It’s really from all over the world. We receive funds, un-cashed checks, payroll checks,” said Kelli Miller. But it’s not just stocks, bonds, and cash. Some of the things you could find in this vault may surprise you.“We find teeth we find, baby socks,” said Miller. And really big ticket items like bearer bonds from Georgia Pacific’s founding company worth between $1,000 and $6,000 each.“We keep it forever. We are just custodians of the money,” said Miller. For Sellers, the $1,700 she forgot about from stocks and a Utah bank account was plenty, especially this time of year.“Right in time for Christmas. I plan on being out the day after Thanksgiving,” said Sellers. But she can’t stop searching for more.My ex husband, I found some money for him. Some really good friends of mine, I found some money for them. Cousins, there’s money out there,” said Sellers. You can search to see if you have unclaimed property or money in Georgia and in other states.Click here and here to see if you have and unclaimed money out there.
