ATLANTA -- Did Jesus rise from the dead? Was it a miracle?Wednesday night CBS 46 introduced you to Tulane University professor Frank Tipler who says he can prove God exists through physics. He also says the principles of physics can prove three miracles in the Bible, only re-confirming God does exist.“A miracle is by definition something extraordinary,” said Father Theodore Book with the Catholic Archdiocese.
“I think it's critically important to the Christian faith,” said Spellman College Professor Rev. Lisa Rhodes. The Bible details many miracles, but maybe none more important than the resurrection.“All Christianity rises and falls on the resurrection,” said Johnson Ferry Baptist Church Pastor Bryant Wright.Tipler found God through math and physics. He says the same principles can prove the miracle of the resurrection.“You can explain everything in the Bible by using physics,” said Tipler. The resurrection story in the scripture details Jesus' rise from the dead.“A resurrection body can vanish from one area of space and reappear in another,” said Tipler.Tipler explains how he believes the resurrection of Jesus happened through a scene in the 1985 movie, Back to the Future.Character Marty McFly uses his time machine to convert matter into energy to travel to the future and back again. Tipler says it's similar to what Jesus did by using the laws of physics.“Regular matter can be turned into energy of an invisible form which is called neutrinos and these would allow a man to vanish and to re-appear as Jesus did to his apostles,” said Tipler.Another example Tipler uses is Mel Gibson's movie, The Passion of the Christ.“At the very end of that movie he showed a picture of the resurrection in which Jesus was lying in the tomb covered with the shroud and suddenly Jesus vanishes from inside the shroud,” said Tipler. “How is that possible? It is possible using the physics of the standard model specifically tells how to convert mass into energy.”Many in the church believe the core of the Christian faith is based on the resurrection. Their belief in his resurrection comes from faith not fact.“If Christ did rise from the dead not only are we forgiven of our sins and conquering sin, we have the opportunity to conquer death,” said Wright.“That God was manifested in flesh through Jesus Christ, was born, lived and died, and resurrected is the core of salvation for those who believe,” said Rhodes.“I think the reality of these miracles is a testament to those who witnessed them,” said Book.Tipler says physics can also prove the virgin birth of Jesus and the incarnation.
