The Grocery Game

What if we told you could save anywhere from $400 to $600 a month and it would cost you less than a minute of your time a day?

Consumer Reporter Kim Fettig shows you how some people are playing their grocery store aisles like a card game in Vegas and they are winning big.

Lisa VanKesteren is a single mom of 3 hungry mouths.

“My kids eat like truckers. My kids eat a lot,” said VanKesteren.

But instead of draining her wallet, she plays something called the grocery game, saving her hundreds and hundreds of dollars.

“It’s an average of 100 dollars a week,” said VanKesteren.

How does she do it? We went with her grocery shopping at a local Kroger.

In produce Van Kesteren picked up an item on sale for 79 cents each so she bought two.

Then she hit the can goods isle.

“I am going to buy 6 soups at 75 cents each,” said VanKesteren.

On the shampoo isle she hit huge savings.

“On sale for $2.49 and I have two $3 off coupons so I will get them both for free,” said VanKesteren.

How could they be free?

For $1.25 a week, VanKesteren logs on to www.grocerygame.com.

It’s an online site that tracks sales at local grocery stores and has your list and coupons ready to print!

”They find the sales, they find the coupons, they tell you what to match with which week to do it in, which days to shop on to get the best deals,” said VanKesteren. The keys words are stack and stockpile.

By combining a store sale with a manufacturer’s coupon, on top of your frequent buyer card, you stack the deals saving the most money.

The result: “Because Kroger doubles coupons every day, I am going to get this laundry detergent for a dollar,” said VanKesteren.

When the deal is that low VanKesteren stock piles creating a virtual grocery store in her home.

“Instead of paying $3 or $4 for one of these when I need it, I simply come in here and get one of my dollar bottles,” said VanKesteren.

Here are the hot tips for using the coupons like a card game:

  • Hold ‘em!
  • Only use a coupon when the item is already on sale, doubling your value

  • Shop hot days!
  • Sales usually start on Wednesday but coupons come on Sunday so combine the two by shopping Sunday through Tuesday.

  • Rain checks!
  • If the product is sold out the store will honor the sale price for several weeks.

For the result: let’s head to the register!

VanKesteren’s total would have been $119.55 without coupons or her Kroger card.

With the Kroger card, her total went down to $76.97.

With coupons her $119 grocery bill was cut to $46.70.

Her total savings equal $72.85.

For those of us who want to save time too, it only takes about 20 minutes a week.

Here are a few stockpiling tips:

Did you know that organic milk can last 3-4 weeks longer than regular? When it is on sale you can stock up and freeze it.

Speaking of freezing, if you buy meat that has a sell by day of today, you can usually ask for a big discount and then put it straight in the freezer.
