GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- New technology could help parents better protect their children against sex predators.People in Gwinnett County can now pinpoint where a registered sex offender lives within a two mile radius.“This allows you to just to plug in your address. The system does it for you,” said Stacey Bourbonnais with the Gwinnett County Sherriff’s Office. The new system, up since Tuesday, will scan an address and list sex offenders within a 2 mile radius. Before the upgrade, a list of offenders was posted on the website and you scrolled down the list and clicked on a name. For Heather Wilson, the new system is way to better protect her 4 month old.“You can't take all that time to look up every name, so it would be nice if you can find out in your general area all the names,” said Wilson. With Halloween approaching, the new site comes at a time when police say children may be at greater risk of being targeted by sex offenders.“They can plug in an address of whatever neighborhood they're going to and within the 2 mile radius it will show them where any sex offender might be living,” said Jeremy Brown with the Gwinnett County Sherriff’s Department. The department says it stays busy keeping track of the 324 registered sex offenders in Gwinnett County. 96 live in Lawrenceville alone.“Just to know that many is in the town of Lawrenceville. Well that's a lot. It's kind of upsetting,” said parent Marie Mercier. To try the new tool go to www.sheriffalerts.com.
