Police: Woman Sets Home On Fire With Child, Mom Inside

EAST POINT, Ga. -- An East Point woman tried to set her home on fire – with her child and elderly mother still inside, police said.Investigators said Doris Williams, 40, set mattresses on fire around 9 p.m. inside the home on Lancaster Drive.Officers said they saw smoke inside the home after responding to a call about an intoxicated woman.The mother and child got out safely.Officers said they found Williams a few minutes later. They said she admitted setting the fire and told them that she was "sick of the people inside the house--and if they called 911--she would burn it (the house) down."Neighbors were surprised to hear about the incident.“I'm quite appalled, seeing as how I just moved into the neighborhood. I've met them and I'm surprised. I didn't think anything like this would happen,” said neighbor Carlos Simon.A police officer who went inside the home was treated for smoke inhalation.Williams was charged with arson and reckless conduct and could face more charges, police said.
