An East Point woman tried to set her home on fire – with her child and elderly mother still inside, police said.

Investigators said Doris Williams, 40, set mattresses on fire around 9 p.m. inside the home on Lancaster Drive.

Officers said they saw smoke inside the home after responding to a call about an intoxicated woman.

The mother and child got out safely.

Officers said they found Williams a few minutes later. They said she admitted setting the fire and told them that she was "sick of the people inside the house--and if they called 911--she would burn it (the house) down."

Neighbors were surprised to hear about the incident.

“I'm quite appalled, seeing as how I just moved into the neighborhood. I've met them and I'm surprised. I didn't think anything like this would happen,” said neighbor Carlos Simon.

A police officer who went inside the home was treated for smoke inhalation.

Williams was charged with arson and reckless conduct and could face more charges, police said.
