Fire Destroys DeKalb Co. Restaurant

Fire At Havana Sandwich Shop Started In Back, Investigators Say

A fire heavily damaged a popular Cuban sandwich shop early Monday.

DeKalb County fire dispatchers said the fire began shortly after midnight at the Havana Sandwich Shop on Buford Highway.

No one was hurt. Fire officials have not said what sparked the flames.

Owner Debbie Benedit said the restaurant was the target of an attempted break-in last week. Her late husband's family migrated to the United States from Cuba, and the restaurant has served sandwiches for 32 years.

The national restaurant guide Zagat has recognized Havana Sandwich Shop as the "Top Cuban Restaurant" in Atlanta several times.

Monday's fire is the second to strike an Atlanta-area restaurant in three days.

Saturday night, fire destroyed the Mr. Drumstick restaurant on the corner of Bolton Road and Coronet Way.

Investigators don't know yet what started that fire.
