Officer Fired, Arrested On Theft Charges

5-Year Veteran

A nearly five-year veteran of the Norcross Police Department accused of stealing money from the evidence room has been fired from the force, an official said.

Arrest warrants show Kinyetta Bass, 27, is wanted on two counts of theft by taking. She was arrested Tuesday morning and booked into the Gwinnett County Jail.

Bass, a Smyrna resident, is accused of taking $763 on July 30 and $2,600 on Aug. 15, the warrants state.

Norcross police Capt. Brian Harr said the department discovered money was missing after an employee noticed a deviation from the department's policy on handling evidence. The employee notified the command staff, and an internal investigation and audit revealed records had been altered.

Money in the evidence room comes from various sources, Harr said. The cash could have been seized in a drug bust, recovered during an arrest or found on the street. The missing money was "not directly evidentiary," meaning it was found property or was being held for safekeeping, Harr said.
