Damage from the tornado that hit north metro Atlanta last week now totals more than $40 million, state officials said Tuesday.

The tornado that touched down on May 20 caused extensive damage in Cherokee, Cobb, north Fulton and Forsyth counties.

The office of Georgia Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine said it may be a couple of weeks before officials have final numbers.

The $40 million refers to insured losses, Oxendine said. He said the figure may increase as more people file personal claims.

The total of weather damage in the state in 2008 now stands at about $415 million.

State officials have not yet released the total uninsured losses. The Georgia Emergency Management Agency will use the uninsured total to request federal relief funds.
