UPDATED: 7:31 am EDT May 12, 2008

Classes are canceled for students in Carroll County schools Monday because of storm damage.

Officials canceled the classes on Monday because of damage from storms on Sunday. All faculty and staff are to report at the regular time.

Georgia Power spokesman Jeff Wilson said 45,000 customers remain without power, including 1,600 in metro Atlanta. Most of the outages are in the Macon area.

Authorities said at least one person is dead after severe storms tore through Georgia, downing trees and damaging homes and business in at least 19 counties.

Gov. Sonny Perdue signed an executive order Sunday afternoon declaring a state of emergency in Carroll and five other counties. It allows state resources to be available for response and recovery activities.
