Trial Begins For Officer In Johnston Shooting

UPDATED: 8:17 am EDT April 21, 2008

Jury selection is scheduled to start Monday in the case of an Atlanta police officer charged in connection with the cover-up of the police killing of a 92-year-old woman.

Arthur Tesler was one of the officers on the scene on Nov. 21, 2006, when Kathryn Johnston was shot during a surprise raid on her Neal Street house. The raid was based on wrong information that cocaine was stored there. Some officers tried to cover up the crime by planting drugs in Johnston's basement.

Tesler pleaded not guilty to charges of violating his oath, making false statements and false imprisonment.

Tesler's attorney, Bill McKenny, told reporters Tesler was a rookie in the Atlanta police narcotics unit. McKenny said Tesler is not as culpable as more experienced officers in the case.

Officers Gregg Junnier and Jason Smith pleaded guilty to a state charge of voluntary manslaughter and a federal charge of violating Johnston's constitutional rights and are awaiting sentencing.
