MARIETTA, Ga. -- Cobb County police charged a high school music teacher Monday with sexually assaulting a student.

Police arrested Steven Martin Parkman, 32, of Dallas, a Harrison High School teacher, late Monday afternoon. He was charged with sexual assault and jailed. Parkman was released on $35,000 bond Tuesday morning.

Cobb County police spokeswoman Cassie Reece said the department's Crimes Against Children Unit was contacted by school officials about allegations of a sexual assault of a 17-year-old girl, who is a student at Harrison High School.

"That's somebody's daughter. I've got a daughter and that's not good. Not good," said parent Del Brooks.

"It makes my stomach sick hearing that," said another parent.

Reece said the allegation does not necessarily point to rape. She said under Georgia law, even if sexual contact was consensual, it would be considered sexual assault because the teacher has supervisory or disciplinary authority over a student.

Parkman has been employed with the Cobb County School System for four years. In February, he was honored as the Student and Teacher Achievement Recognition program teacher of the 2007-2008 year for Harrison High School.

A neighbor told CBS 46 News that Parkman is married and has two children.

A spokesman for Cobb County Schools, Jay Dillon, says Parkman resigned Friday.
