A midtown Atlanta traffic camera captured a hit-and-run accident on videotape.
Fast Facts
  • Midtown camera caught hit-and-run on tape.
  • Driver went to victim but drove away, leaving man on street.
  • Police are using the tape to find the driver.

The tape, obtained exclusively by CBS 46 News, shows a white SUV hitting a man who was trying to cross an intersection at 14th and Peachtree streets.

The driver pulls over, gets out, and appears to help the man. But moments later, the driver returns to his SUV and drives away, leaving the victim lying in the street.

Col. Wayne Mock is in charge of Midtown Blue, Atlanta police’s public safety force for the area. Mock said security cameras like the one that caught the hit-and-run are proving to be a tremendous resource for police.

Mock said the traffic cameras in midtown and other parts of Atlanta are monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

In this case, police are using the videotape to find the driver.

“When the guy says 'Hey, it wasn't me', we have a picture of the street, we have a picture of his car, the direction of travel and quite a picture of the accident itself,” Mock said.

Mock said that in this case, the driver had the right of way.

“It appears at this time it was the pedestrian's fault. But at any rate, when you strike a pedestrian, you need to stop and render aid. That's a serious felony,” Mock said.

In the video, several other cars pass the man, but never stop to help. A man in a white shirt crosses the street, but keeps his distance from the victim. Eventually, two women join him and the man gets help.
