Report: Vick Likely To Join Plea Deal

POSTED: 7:10 am EDT August 15, 2007
UPDATED: 7:47 am EDT August 16, 2007

Michael Vick could join two of his co-defendants in a plea deal this week.

CBS 46 Sports has learned that Vick's Atlanta attorney has flown to Virginia. CBS 46 has also learned Vick's defense team is meeting right now to discuss a plea deal.

CBS 46 has also learned the plea deal would include a prison term of between 18 and 36 months and would give Vick the chance to return to the NFL.

Other reports said Wednesday that Vick could join Purnell Peace and Quanis Phillips in a plea deal on federal dogfighting charges.

Vick, Peace, and Phillips are accused of running an interstate dogfighting enterprise known as "Bad Newz Kennels" with Tony Taylor, 34, on Vick's property in rural Virginia.

Taylor plead guilty on July 30 to dogfighting charges and accused Vick of bankrolling the operation.

The news comes a day after Peace's plea hearing was postponed.

CBS46.com has confirmed the hearing, which was supposed to be taking place Thursday, will now be held at 9:15 a.m. Friday, the same time that the plea hearing for the second co-defendant, Phillips, was scheduled to be held.

Also in the Vick case, sources told CBS 46 Tuesday that Michael Vick’s defense team has been divided over a possible plea deal for the Atlanta Falcons quarterback.

Those sources told CBS 46’s Gil Tyree Tuesday that one part of the defense team wanted to cut a deal, while the other wanted to take its chances with a trial.

If the Vick case does go to trial, sources said Tuesday that one of Vick's teammates, who is a prominent member of the team, could be called to testify. The sources say the Falcons know about this.

The Falcons did not comment on the case Tuesday night.

Owner Arthur Blank is vacationing at his summer home in Montana.

Reports say federal prosecutors have given the Vick defense team until Friday to reach a plea deal or possibly face new charges stemming from the dogfighting investigation.
