Story: John Mark Karr Talks About JonBenet Murder Charges
"I've had people shout out 'killer', 'murderer,'" Karr said. "I've had people shout out obscenities at me."Karr has been back in metro Atlanta for almost a year fighting the stigma associated with his name."It hurts, it's difficult but I understand it," Karr said.Karr fled the country in 2001, planning never to return, but in August 2006 those plans changed. He was tracked down in Thailand and arrested for the murder of JonBenet Ramsey."I was with Jon Benet when she died," Karr said in 2006. "Her death was an accident."Just days after that admission, DNA cleared Karr and he was free to live his life. But Karr didn't get the warm southern reception he was hoping for."I'm not a registered sex offender," Karr said. "I was treated like that and it hurts me. I know there is a threat there that somebody could act upon their hate, because that's hate and hate is a powerful emotion and it drives violence."Karr has been living with his father near Chastain Park, where neighbors have not been shy about their feelings toward him."It's not like John Mark Karr just moved into the neighborhood," Karr said. "I've been there, I've been there for a lifetime. I'm 42 years old. I've been returning to that house my entire life. The children were safe then, the children are safe now."Karr insisted that he never harmed a child despite being investigated for three different child slayings.Mayerle: You said you've never been charged with a crime against a child, but have you ever harmed a child?
Karr: I'm trying to tell you if I had harmed a child I would be charged.
Mayerle: JonBenet is not the first child murder that you've been investigated for.
Karr: No.
Mayerle: There have been others?
Karr: That I'm aware of. The one I have knowledge of is … involved a little girl that was from Georgia and her name was Georgia Moses. She was 12 years old. The detectives pointed out that her body was found just a distance from my house in Petaluma. The only thing is that I was not living in Petaluma at the time her body was found.Karr said the other two murders are in Alabama and in Atlanta, but investigators have not given him their identities."I had no involvement in those children's deaths," Karr said.Karr's latest run-in with the law came just weeks ago in Atlanta, under arrest for a scuffle with his father.Karr agreed to six months of domestic violence intervention classes so the charges would be dropped."It was a very negative experience," Karr said. "It was difficult for me for everyone in the family."The woman who has been by his side through it all is his fiancée, 22-year-old Brooke Simmons."I think if it had not been for Brooke I would still be inside the house with the door locked," Karr said. "She's the person who has brought me from the deepest depression to laughter. She's a wonderful girl who has been by my side and has defended me."Karr said he hopes they will be able to get married and live their lives together, but knows the JonBenet Ramsey murder mystery will always be a cloud over his head and in his heart. When Mayerle asked if Karr thought he would be arrested again for the murder of JonBenet Ramsey, he responded, " I have no idea. You'll have to ask law enforcement. Only time will tell."Karr will be in Atlanta for at least six months. Then, he said, he may leave the metro Atlanta area, but right now he doesn't know where he'll go.
