School Administrators Learn To Fight Obesity

Head Start administrators from across the South attended a seminar on Tuesday, aimed at fighting childhood obesity.

The project I Am Moving, I Am Learning teaches administrators songs they can teach to students back in their home schools.

Social worker Angel Allen brought her 5-year-old daughter, Alauran, with her to the seminar.

"I just like to dance because it's just so much fun," Alauran said. "I like music."

Dr. Linda Carson, a professor at West Virginia University, created the program.

Carson said the idea is to get Head Start children interested in treating their bodies well.

"These are the adults who impact these very young children," Carson said.

Carson said a big reason childhood obesity has reached a crisis mode in our country is physical inactivity.

"Our children need to be encouraged to be physically active," Carson said. "The best way to do that is to be good play partners with them."

The program also stresses healthy choices for meals and snacks.

Alauran is already learing about healthy choices. Her mother is hoping to spread the message to low-income families she encounters every day.

"A lot of times when you're dealing with younger mothers, they might not necessarily know how to make things nutritious or how to make their family healthier," Allen said.
